Roy Hodgson Must Embrace England's Attacking Identity at Euro 2016

As if Roy Hodgson needed further confirmation of his England team’s strengths and weaknesses, he got it within 13 minutes of Sunday’s friendly clash against Turkey at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. It only took that long for them to underline their potency in attack contrasted with their deficiency at the back. 

It offered a glimpse into the kind of side England will most likely be at this summer’s UEFA European Championship.

With qualification so straight-forward (England won all 10 of their fixtures), little was drawn regarding the style of play the Three Lions will adopt in France. Against the likes of Switzerland, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania and San Marino, Hodgson’s side were expected to dominate. It will be different at Euro 2016.

Recent friendly matches against Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey have told us much about England’s prospects as anything else. And in every single one of those games the Three Lions have shown themselves to be an inherently dynamic in the final third, but helplessly feeble in defense. At Euro 2016 the same team will surely make an appearance.

But to give his side the best chance of success Hodgson must embrace England’s best and worst qualities. Two years ago, there were signs of the team’s development as an attacking force, but it was not enough to get them past the group stage, exiting before they could truly impose themselves on the World Cup in Brazil. 

England will seek to secure a rather different fate this summer, and they must do so by accepting their identity as an attacking outfit. That is where their best players are to be found and where they can inflict damage on even the strongest of European national teams this summer. Look at their win over Germany in Berlin last year.

In Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy, Hodgson has two of the game’s hottest strikers at his disposal, with the two demonstrating their burgeoning understanding in the weekend’s win over Turkey.

The duo give England a cutting edge sharper than essentially every other country at Euro 2016, besides France and Spain. Not even Germany boast the finishing instinct England can.

Of course, with Kane and Vardy playing their first major tournament for England there is the worry that the experience may overwhelm both players, although having led Premier League title challenges for their respective clubs last season that seems somewhat unlikely. 

“A lot of our players, when you take Wayne Rooney out of the equation, are still very inexperienced at international level,” Hodgson explained, per James Riach of the Guardian. “Lots don’t have double figures in caps. We need to be a bit careful before we say that Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane or Dele Alli are going to win us the Euros. You’re putting pressure on their shoulders that their CVs don’t bear.​“

Hodgson is right to mention Dele Alli along with Kane and Vardy as the vanguard of England’s glittering next generation.

The Tottenham Hotspur man was the breakthrough star of the 2015/16 Premier League season and has carried his form into the international level, impressing in the handful of performances he has turned in for England. He could be the breakthrough star of this summer’s European Championship too.

But what do Alli, Kane and Vardy’s place in the England side mean for their captain Rooney? Even if Hodgson does embrace his side’s attacking identity he must think on how exactly he wants to do that.

Rooney became his country’s all-time top goalscorer last year, netting 51 goals in 109 games for the national team, but after a turgid campaign at club level, the Manchester United forward’s starting lineup spot is far from assured.

“Wayne, I repeat, is our captain,” said Hodgson when asked whether Rooney’s place in his team was safe for the European Championship, per Matt Law of the Telegraph. “He has captained the team extremely well these past two years, taken us through a qualification campaign, where we had complete success, 10 wins out of 10, so it doesn’t please me too much when it is suggested the moment he gets injured and doesn’t play he deserves to be jettisoned in some way. He certainly doesn’t deserve that.”

Indeed, Rooney showed in last week’s FA Cup final that he can still perform at the top level, even if that is as a midfielder. But by fielding the United skipper, Hodgson might rob his team of their greatest quality. With Rooney in the side England are a much slower, more ponderous outfit. The manager has a difficult decision to make. 

And that’s before he even decides whether to take Marcus Rashford to France this summer. The teenager was named in England’s 26-man preliminary squad, joining up with the national team at their pre-tournament training camp. The 18-year-old’s exuberance and raw finishing instinct makes him a compelling prospect for Hodgson.  

"There is no doubt I think I made the right decision putting him in this large group," Hodgson explained, per BBC Sport, following England’s friendly win over Turkey on Sunday. "But you will also know full well that where he is playing we actually have a lot of competition for places.”

It seems unlikely that Rashford will make the final squad for Euro 2016, particularly with Daniel Sturridge also certain to be handed a ticket to board the plane to France, but his inclusion in Hodgson’s provisional squad illustrates the quality England have right now in that position. 

Hodgson might have had an even tougher call to make had Danny Welbeck not suffered a serious injury, with the Arsenal forward a tactical kingpin for England. His absence meant a late reshuffle with Rashford the most obvious beneficiary. How that will impact England in France this summer is rather more uncertain. 

But Hodgson still has a wealth of attacking talent to use at the European Championship. That talent must form the basis of his side’s identity. Adopt an attacking mantra to fit their attacking threat and England might just stand a chance.
