West Ham are looking to sign Christian Benteke after seeing a move for one of France’s top strikers rejected – but they could lose their star man, with Real Madrid reportedly in the hunt, according to Wednesday morning’s papers.
WEST HAM READY TO MOVE FOCUS ON TO BENTEKE
West Ham are eyeing a move for Liverpool forward Christian Benteke after having a club record £31m bid for Alexandre Lacazette rejected by Lyon.
The Sun claims the French side have turned down the massive bid – causing huge frustration at the club and ensuring their striker search must turn elsewhere.
A Hammers insider said: “The world has gone potty.”
West Ham are now considering their options with a new striker their top priority during this summer’s transfer window.
Slaven Bilic may now struggle to land Marseille’s Michy Batshuayi as he declared he wants to play for a Champions League club – leaving unwanted Liverpool striker Benteke as their prime target.
Hammers chiefs believe they could land the striker for around the £20million mark after he struggled to make an impact at Anfield following his £32.5million switch from Aston Villa last summer.
Benteke has already signalled his intentions to stay at Liverpool next season, but could be persuaded to move on if Jurgen Klopp tells him he is not wanted.
REAL IN THE HUNT FOR HAMMERS FAVOURITE
Staying with West Ham and Real Madrid are looking to sign West Ham and France midfielder Dimitri Payet, 29, according to reports in France.
Le 10 Sport suggest Real Madrid are considering a move for the Hammers favourite – but will wait until after Euro 2016 to see how he performs.
The Frenchman enjoyed a stellar campaign for the Hammers, scoring 12 goals in 38 appearances including a handful of sublime free-kicks.
Payet’s form has been rewarded with a call-up to the France squad for this summer’s tournament and Real scouts will be present at all of the host nation’s games to keep an eye on the 29-year-old.
Real are planning to offload James Rodriguez this summer and view Payet as the ideal candidate to replace the Colombian.
Payed signed a new contract with West Ham this year as the club tried to play down any rumours linking him with a move away from east London.
But the lure of playing in the Champions League for Real could persuade Payet to force through a move if the Spanish giants firm up their interest with a bid in July.
