Wales manager Coleman wary of Leicester's Vardy
Chris Coleman has likened Leicester's Jamie Vardy to his old Welsh teammate and former Manchester City, Liverpool and Cardiff (among others) striker Craig Bellamy, basically admitting (like Bellamy, as he was!) he's 'a pain' and someone you don't want to come up against.
Bellamy was like that annoying wasp you just wanted to swat!
The type of player you hated playing against but would certainly want in your team so for Vardy to be likened to him is some compliment in my book.
Coleman's wary of the threat England could, or should, pose as a whole to Wales in the meeting on 16th June in Lens but the pace of Vardy is something he's most concerned about, telling sky sports his 'old school' style gives him that edge:
'Vardy is a good player. I was a defender myself and you don't want to be running back to your own goal the whole time. He's like Craig Bellamy, all he wanted to do was run in behind.
'I don't care if you are the best defender on the planet and are quick, you don't want (Vardy) running behind you all the time. But where he comes from (non-league), and how he plays his football, he is very much old school. It's hard not to like him.'
Rumour has it Vardy might not even start for England this summer though?
Much like I've said about Tottenham's Harry Kane, with him 'nailed on' to start, this has to be something the next highest goalscorer in the Premier League this season has to do...
Unlike Hodgson, at this point in time, Coleman knows he's got a job after Euro 2016 as he's signed a new deal that takes him through until the 2018 World Cup.
This is something Hodgson's aiming for though.
Although Coleman knows the expectation on England means the pressure is greater on us in Group B than it is himself, Russia or Slovakia with the Three Lions manager a 'realistic man' so he'll know what is expected.
Will that pressure be too much? Possibly so for Coleman:
'England will be thinking quarter-finals and semi-finals. If he doesn't get there...Roy is a realistic man. The pressure on Roy is different to the pressure on us, Russia or Slovakia. Look at England as a team and they have strength in every department, they have strength in depth. Yes, they'll be fancied, but there is great pressure on them.'
At the same time though Coleman does feel Hodgson is 'perfect' for the role:
'Roy is perfect for it with his experience, his personality. He is very calm, that will work well for the players. He doesn't get excited, he's been to tournaments and that will stand him in him in good stead.'
