Manchester United could swoop for James Rodriguez “if Real Madrid sign Paul Pogba”
Real Madrid‘s attempts to sign Paul Pogba this summer could in turn enable Manchester United to swoop in for Colombian international James Rodriguez.
The former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss was appointed by the Red Devils late last month as the replacement for Louis Van Gaal, who was sacked despite ending the club’s three-year wait for a trophy by winning the FA Cup.
He has already been active in the transfer market by completing a deal for highly-rated central defender Eric Bailly from La Liga outfit Villarreal as the Portuguese coach starts a rebuilding process at Old Trafford in a bid to restore the club back to the pinnacle of English football.
“Will James Rodriguez be offered to Man United?
“When he leaves Real Madrid, he certainly will be because, of course, Jorge Mendes is James Rodriguez’s agent and has a great relationship with Real Madrid.
“He’s Jose Mourinho’s agent and he’s very tight with Ed Woodward – the Man United executive vice-chairman.
“It just depends on if he’s going to leave. He was out of the Real Madrid side towards the end of the season and didn’t have a great year.
“If Real Madrid did sign Paul Pogba, then you would imagine they would have to shift James in which case Man United would be the sensible option.
United are also interested in re-signing Pogba, who left the club in 2012 on a free transfer after growing frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities.
However, the relationship between the 23-year-old at United remains fractured, which is likely to hinder their hopes of a deal and as a result could see Mourinho raid his former club by bringing Rodriguez to the Premier League.
The former Porto star joined Madrid in the summer of 2014 on the back of an excellent showing for Colombia at the World Cup.
After an excellent debut season in Spain, scoring 13 goals and registering the same number of assists in 29 La Liga appearances, Rodriguez found himself out of favour for the Santiago Bernabeu outfit during the 2015-2016 campaign.
He started just 17 games in the league and was also an unused substitute in the Champions League final victory on penalties over local rivals Atletico Madrid.
James Rodriguez recorded an average pass accuracy of 87% for Real Madrid in La Liga this season.
