    • Vardy would be the hero as he converted from close range late on to give England a morale-boosting win

Roy Hodgson had said he wanted his young side to play without the burden of history and there is no denying they approached this warm-up encounter with the ambition and vitality England’s manager will want them to replicate in France. Goals from Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy secured an impressive victory, and what was Turkey’s first defeat in almost 18 months.

But these England players, like their ‘fathers’ as Hodgson described them, were not without ‘sin’ here at a third-empty Etihad Stadium, their particular failings coming in the form of the kind of defensive errors that could yet cost them dear at the European Championship.
Cancelling out Harry Kane’s early goal proved all too easy for a Turkey side that came into this game unbeaten since November 2014 and highlighted exactly the concerns Hodgson will have this summer. As good as they are going forward, they seem alarmingly vulnerable to forwards of any real quality.

As an attacking force England are certainly exciting, and the manner in which they pressed Turkey was very encouraging indeed. It was terrific to watch, with Kane so nearly creating a goal-scoring opportunity for Jamie Vardy inside the first 60 seconds. That a goal came two minutes later was a measure of how sprightly a start England made, the sight of Dele Alli nutmegging Mehmet Topal to send Kane clear enough to have Hodgson and his coaches salivating with excitement. Kane was probably a smidgen offside but a terrific little move, one ignited by Raheem Sterling, it nevertheless remained.

It was not long, however, before this talented Turkey side were troubling an inexperienced England defence missing Chris Smalling. If Kyle Walker excelled in blocking a stinging effort from Ozan Tufan, Turkey’s 13th minute equaliser was one England’s players will not enjoy watching again. Oguzhan Ozyakup’s ball for Vokan Sen caught Danny Rose horribly out of position, while Joe Hart’s decision to intercept Sen’s cross proved a serious error of judgement. England’s goalkeeper got nowhere near it, leaving Calhanoglu with the simplest of finishes and Rose holding his head in despair.

Hart made amends with a save to deny Olcay Sahan in the final minutes. But while Hodgson is right when he says this England side should ignore the disappointments of the past he might want to slip a few Ashley Cole DVDs under some hotel room doors in the coming weeks.

There were other concerns, too, for Hodgson. Vardy might have began the match brightly but that role on the left flank was one that did not seem to play to his strengths. On the contrary the Footballer of the Year looked isolated, with too few chances for him to utilise that pace. Interestingly Hodgson abandoned the 4-2-3-1 formation he started with after 56 minutes, switching to a midfield diamond that saw Vardy join Kane in attack, Sterling in behind them with Alli, Eric Dier and Jack Wilshere across the midfield.

Discipline, or rather a lack of it, was nevertheless a worry. Alli has just served a three-match ban for violent conduct and he responded to a late challenge here by throttling an opponent and Wilshere also appeared to run into a Turkish player with his elbow raised. Wilshere did okay alongside the impressive Dier but the Arsenal midfielder definitely needs more games. Here he just did not look fit enough to really get a grip on this game.

Kane might have scored his fifth international goal but Hodgson might want to tell him to be a little less greedy. He shoots from almost any position and takes all the free-kicks as well, when it would surely make more sense to have him at the heart of the action. It might also be an idea to take the penalties off him, having missed one in the 71st minute with an effort that shaved the post after Vardy had done so well to earn it in the first place.

It was an entertaining game, with the sight of Fatih Terim having his mobile phone confiscated by the fourth official – seemingly he was watching replays on it and then complaining to officials – even adding a touch of comedy.

Dier, as previously mentioned, was outstanding, even getting forward to send a header into the sidenetting at one stage. The change in formation did enable Vardy to make one of those trademark runs for the penalty – although how much contact there was from Topal was debatable – but the transition was not entirely smooth. Even after Hodgson replaced Wilshere with Jordan Henderson and Sterling with Danny Drinkwater.

But the winning goal nevertheless came, a mix-up between Volkan Babacan and Ismail
Koybasi in trying to clear a Gary Cahill header inviting the Vardy to seize on the mistake with a close-range finish. It will only boost the confidence of a side already buoyant after that recent defeat of Germany in Berlin. And it will once again leave Hodgson contemplating exactly where Wayne Rooney slots into this side. Alli might need to demonstrate greater control of that temper but he too impressed behind Vardy and Kane.

That said, Sterling is by no means guaranteed a place on this form.
