James Rodriguez says he plans long-term Real Madrid stay despite talk of transfer exit
Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez has admitted this has been a “strange” season for him but he hopes to be with the club for a number of years amid suggestions he could transfer away this summer. The midfielder signed for Real in the summer of 2014 after a successful World Cup, moving from Monaco for a fee that could be worth up to £71 million according to reports.
However, this season he has struggled to make a regular impact and he has been linked with a move away from the club.
New Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has drawn up a £150m transfer wishlist as he looks to redesign his squad. Clients of Jorge Mendes, the agent who represents Mourinho, such as Sporting’s Joao Mario and Valencia’s Andre Gomes are on the club’s radar for midfield additions and Rodriguez, also a Mendes client, has been linked.
However speaking after the Champions League final success over Atletico Madrid, Rodriguez said that he wants to be with the club for many years.
Rodriguez told reporters: “The season was a little strange but when you have bad things you learn too, eventually you learn every day. You never know in football but I want to stay here and my idea is to be here for many more years.
“I think I need to look forward. I’m happy here. All my people are happy. This is the ideal club and I want to be here. I’m happy, everyone played a great game and in the end it was good. I wanted the team to win, what’s best is I get another Champions League.”
The Colombian international was an unused substitute during the final, as manager Zinedine Zidane started Casemiro in midfield and chose to turn to Isco and Lucas Vazquez off the bench.
As the captain of the national team, Rodriguez is part of the Colombia squad for the upcoming Copa America Centenario.
They have been drawn into a group alongside the hosts America as well as Costa Rica and Paraguay, with two teams going through to the next round.
